LEARN ABOUT HORIZONS

"This is the best leadership program I have seen."

-Bill George, Georgia Tech 1964 , author of forthcoming book on leadership development, True North: Discover Your Authentic Leadership

What is Horizons?
Horizons is a challenging and proven leadership experience specifically created for Sigma Chis who are eager and willing to improve themselves and their world.

Participants begin their experiences in an on-site immersion of whole-brained learning that engages their minds and bodies.

As a participant, you will explore the inner territories of leadership:
A team of Sigma Chi alumni faculty who have been carefully chosen and intensively trained to guide the Horizons program, and who share your commitment to self-improvement, will guide you. You will learn from your guide, the other undergraduates, and from yourself.

Horizons 2007 will unfold amid the splendor of Snowbird, Utah, an ideal setting for outdoor adventure, interactive learning, and inspired reflection.

Horizons will push you to think and act differently. The experience is just a first step, it is the beginning of a personal journey that will change you, and in so doing, change our world.

The Balfour Leadership Training Workshop, established in 1947, is a program designed to improve the quality of leadership in the Fraternity. Each August, leaders from Sigma Chi's undergraduate chapters spend four days on a college campus, deeply immersed in presentations, discussions, and problem solving sessions about chapter operations and other issues that affect a chapter's viability.

What is Rush?

Rush is exactly what it says. You are rushed around the campus to the different fraternities to check out what each has to offer. The formal nights are when each of the fraternities have about 20 minutes to tell you why you should join.

The preference nights are when you get to know the brothers on a deeper level over some food and activities.

Fraternity Bid Session

This is a time for the fraternity to meet for several hours to decide who they want to give a bid to. This usually occurs behind closed doors the night before Bid Day. We look for individuals who live up to our Standard and Creed. This is a very long process because we only accept true leaders.

Bid Day?

The day that you have been waiting for. On this day, there will be set hours for you pick up your bids from the fraternities that have chosen you for pledgeship.

Induction?

If you receive a bid from Sigma Chi, in the Bid Card, there will be instructions for Induction. This is a formal ceremony in which you will become a pledge of the Kappa Psi Chapter of Sigma Chi

Pledgeship

Pledgeship is meant to build you as a leader and prepare you for membership in Sigma Chi. If you have been accepted as a new member of Sigma Chi you already live up to the standards that each of the brothers do. Remember, that membership in Sigma Chi is not earned it's learned.

During your pledgeship, you will embark on many activities with your fellow pledge brothers, participate in Homecoming and Greek Week activities, your weekly pledge meetings, and the famous Pledge Retreat at the end.

Initiation

Now that you have completed all of the requirments as a new member, you will be Initiated as a brother of Sigma Chi.

Why Should I Join Sigma Chi?
horizons.jpg

What I found with Sigma Chi was more than I ever expected, and I haven't turned my back since then. What I found was a true brotherhood, other men who were as ambitious, leaders, and unique each in their own. I have found that when you join, you're not buying friends, but paying for a future. I say this because Sigma Chi has helped me grow to be a leader.

I have had the opportunity of meeting some truly amazing people since I have joined, and been part of some events that are very inspiring. You find out how passionate so many other Sigs are about this organization.

Sigma Chi has given me such a great friendship base, and it extends far past this chapter. I have found myself welcome wherever there is a chapter. It has also built me up as a leader, and given me the desire to become the Recruitment Chair of the Kappa Psi chapter.

I hope to see you all at Recruitment!

Dear Incoming Freshman,

I would like to welcome the entire incoming freshman class to the University of Tennessee at Martin. I would also like to encourage everyone to go through recruitment and find out what is to be offered by joining a Greek system.

As most of you are unsure about going Greek, I also had my own reservations at one time. I had said over and over “I don't want to pay for my friends,” and “the guys that join a Fraternity are nothing like me.” Then my friends all started to join Sigma Chi, and I was reluctant because of my prior reservations to the Greek system, but I decided to find out what was the attraction.
